Comprehensive School Counseling Program
Classroom Counseling
Each class attends classroom counseling once per month. DCS uses Core Essentials Curriculum. Lessons are also chosen based on the input received from the parents', staff, and students' needs assessment that is completed at the beginning of each school year and include topics such as self-esteem and coping skills.
Individual Counseling
I also work with students one-on-one to discuss issues such as friendship and conflict resolution. Students are referred by a parent or teacher or can even refer themselves. What we talk about stays confidential unless the child is in danger of getting hurt or hurting someone else.
Small group counseling
Small group counseling sessions are offered to provide additional services to children with common needs or concerns. Small groups are beneficial for students because it allows them to share their thoughts and feelings with peers. In the elementary level, topics of small groups may include resiliency and academic success. The ultimate goal of small group counseling is to work through things such as interpersonal issues, to develop strategies and skills to positively impact their school achievement, and to increase appropriate social interaction skills.
Our school counseling program is aligned with standards set by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA).

ASCA national model (2012) states that a comprehensive school counseling program is an integral component of the school’s mission. Comprehensive school counseling programs, driven by student data and based on the ASCA National Model:
• ensure equitable access to a rigorous education for all students
• identify the knowledge and skills all students will acquire as a result of the K–12 comprehensive school counseling program
• are delivered to all students in a systematic fashion
• are based on data-driven decision making
• are provided by a state-credentialed school counselor
Effective school counseling programs are a collaborative effort between the school counselor, families, community stakeholders
and other educators to create an environment resulting in a positive impact on student achievement. Education professionals,
including school counselors, value and respond to the diversity and individual differences in our societies and
communities in culturally sensitive and responsive ways.
Confidentiality
Whatever a student shares with me is considered confidential information. Only in the following circumstances would I be required to release confidential information:
• If the child gives serious indications that she/he is likely to harm self or others.
• If the child indicates she/he is being abused or is in danger.
• If a court order is given.
